Hog Hammock ...

... the last known Gullah Geechee Community.

After slavery ended, white landowners on Sapelo moved all the slave descendents -- with much resentment -- into the area now known as Hog Hammock.

The "Population 70" figure in the sign is from the 2010 census, and sadly, the permanent population of the island is now 44. Our guide Chuck Evans -- who now lives off the island himself - noted that the attractions of living on the mainland are very strong, especially for young people.
